Providence residents take part by the hundreds in a "Holy Laughter" ritual in a remarkable scene in the hit film Laughology which plays the Rhode Island International Film Festival this Saturday at 9:30 pm.
In the film Laughology, which is about why laughter is contagious, the crew travels to a church in Seekonk, where over a thousand people take part in Holy Laughter, many falling on the floor laughing in fits of ecstatic chortling. Adherents of Holy Laughter believe that Jesus laughs through them and will often appear to convulse on the floor for several minutes at a time.
“It was remarkable,” said Laughology Director Albert Nerenberg “To see the straight-laced residents of Providence falling down on the floor, faces exploding, rolling around in hysterics. It certainly gave us an odd impression of Rhode Island. “
Laughology which was called “Screamingly Funny” (National Post) reveals some of the world’s most extraordinary laughing tendencies, including an epidemic in Tanzania where over 30,000 people started laughing for no apparent reason. The film also features the man with the most contagious laugh in the world.
Laughology audiences laugh after film ends
“The screenings of Laughology had some of the loudest collective laughs I had ever heard in a movie theatre,” wrote film reviewer Gabor Pertic in AnE Vibe. “By the end, the crowd was in hysterics.”
According to Lia Granger in the National Post “laughter has never been so thoroughly explored in a film as it is here.”
by Albert Nerenberg, is a hilarious groundbreaking look at why laughter is contagious and the birth of the international laughter movement. The feature documentary, produced for CTV. Nerenberg works as a Laughologist for Canadian media and will attend the Rhode Island Premiere on Saturday.
