Seekonk’s Got Talent! Family-friendly talent show shaping up in Seekonk By George Morse
Think you’ve got what it takes to impress the entire town of Seekonk? Maybe it’s time to brush off those dancing shoes, sharpen up that ventriloquist act, hone in that stand-up routine or take the singing from the shower to the stage. The Seekonk-based Yankee Volunteers Fife and Drum Corps is teaming with Raymour and Flanigan furniture stores to give local residents a chance to show the entire community what they’ve got in the first ever town-wide talent show called “Seekonk’s Got Talent!” The event is open to all Seekonk residents ages 10 and up. Singers, dancers and other individuals and groups, including families, are invited to take part. Jenay Evans, a Yankee Volunteers member, said the competition is a chance for residents to have some fun and maybe even see a side of their neighbors they never knew existed. “This is a community event that is badly needed,” Mrs. Evans said. “In addition to recognizing and rewarding talented individuals and groups, the evening is also an opportunity for Seekonk resident to celebrate the unknown talents of friends and neighbors from their very own town,” Mrs. Evans said. “You always hear about the problems going on around town, but you never really hear about the good stuff. We’re hoping this will just be a really fun time for everybody.”
Preliminary screenings for “Seekonk’s Got Talent!” will be held on Saturday, March 21 from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Raymour and Flanigan community room, located on Route 6. Mrs. Evans said that these sessions won’t be true auditions, but rather a chance for judges to make sure the final show doesn’t consist of people just looking to make a joke out of the competition. “This is just a chance for us to be sure that when they take a registration form and fill it out, they’re serious about being part of this,” Mrs. Evans said. “We want to make sure they’ve got something prepared and aren’t just kind of fly-by-night so we know we can put them in the playbill.” Additionally, Mrs. Evans said this screening will be a chance for program organizers to get a feel for what type of line-up the final competition will have and help prevent any repetitive acts. “We don’t want to do something like have five dance acts in a row,” Mrs. Evans said. “We want to have a nice, interesting program.” Of course, Mrs. Evans said, all entries to the competition must be family friendly and free of obscenities. Get ready Registration for the event is $25. Entry forms can be picked up at Raymour Flanigan, the town clerk’s office at Town Hall and the Seekonk Public Library on Newman Avenue. Forms can also be requested by e-mailing yankeevolunteers@comcast.net Performers will compete for three cash prizes, with the first place winner taking home $500. The final event will be held on Saturday, March 28 at 7 p.m. in the Seekonk High School auditorium. All proceeds from the event will benefit the non-profit Yankee Volunteers.
