- ATTLEBORO - A number of state and local dignitaries will be on hand Friday for the opening of the new Attleboro Express Registry of Motor Vehicles in the old post office building on Park Street.
The day-long event will kick off at 10 a.m. with the first tours of the new office, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:45 a.m., with Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Murray, Register Rachel Kaprielian, Mayor Kevin Dumas, state Reps. Bill Bowles, D-Attleboro, and Betty Poirier, R-North Attleboro, and state Sens. Scott Brown, R-Wrentham, and James Timilty, D-Walpole, all of whom are expected to attend.
Following the morning ribbon-cutting, a complimentary hot luncheon buffet will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. with more state and local officials expected to stop by and check out the registry's new digs.
"The open house was planned as a family-friendly event, and we hope everyone will be able to stop by to take a tour and stay for lunch," Dumas said.
The first 200 attendees will receive an Attleboro RMV Open House auto keepsake and a ticket for the free drawing of an "Attleboro Area Gift Basket" with over $300 in donated gift certificates and items from the Attleboro area. Later, at 5 p.m., city officials will hold an "Open House Reception," with another ribbon-cutting, featuring Dumas and the city's municipal council, scheduled for 6 p.m.
"We are offering both a morning program and evening reception, as we recognize that people who work fulltime may not be able to attend the earlier program" Dumas said.
The day's events will be paid for by various business donations, with no cost incurred by city or state taxpayers, according to a news release from the mayor's office.
Donors, according to the news release, include: Attleboro Jewelry Makers, Leawood Appraisal, Richard Cuddy Insurance, Cobalt Industries, Jonathan's Coffee Cafe, Richard & Martha Conti, Attleboro Art's Museum, Rep. Bill Bowles, Howard and Marcia Bibeault, Attorney John Jacobi III, Sheriff Thomas Hodgson, Holman Insurance Agency, Frank and Sandy Cook, and Dumas.

I went to the new Express Registry yesterday and NO lines, NO waiting. The Express RMV is in the basement of the building - must enter at the rear of the building. Seemed to be plenty of parking.
p.s. The state is also providing an online self-service reminder service to set up an email reminder for yourself when it's time to renew your license, since they no longer mail out reminders. It's on the RMV website.

The service reminder is a great way to go...saves paper and time. I would like to see more information become available online. We have options to receive things in the mail or online from the private industry- how about the same thing from the government?
